A Behind The Scenes Look at Our Latest Decks

After the dust settled around Slip's latest range of decks, we sat down with Hein Kotzè, the designer behind the 3rd range of Slip decks to get his feedback on the process involved with coming up with a new range of deck designs.

What was some of the main ideas behind the new designs?
The sequel to a great success is always the hardest. With the new range Alwyn and I wanted to start with something fresh… but still keep some resemblance to the previous range.

The initial idea was an emblem, or a crest. People now pretty much knew what SLIP was, and we wanted to “label” these decks as something that has solidly been established and is on its way to becoming something great.

Where do you start with something like that?
Adapting the logo itself was the first step. With a crest in mind and the addition of some previous design elements (the reaching arms seen on one of the previous decks) the SLIP CREST was born.

What Inspired The Evolution Design?
Using the design process as a design itself, the first deck was created depicting how the logo was shaped and defined to what it finally became. I kept it rough and sketchy, just like a design pad would look like when you’re busy creating/scribbling out a new design.

This deck is ultimately an idea in progress; The evolution of the SLIP CREST
And The Crest Deck, Which Is Competely Different From The Evolution?
We kept it simple...

Branding a deck with ONLY the CREST. No explanation needed: this is SLIP
And Lastly, The Very Intricate Roots Design?
I played around with the idea of growing/reaching/influencing. SLIP is on its way to playing a big role in the local skate industry – and this is what this deck is.

Roots… growing and spreading out in solid ground, as the company that is SLIP, is starting to really cast a bigger shadow for people to escape out of the everyday sun.

New, fresh, and established...yet perfectly recognisable

This is the NEW SLIP
